The Great North Run is a bucket-list event. Attracting over 60,000 runners every year, it is one of the most iconic races
in the UK running calendar. So, whether you're new to running, a seasoned runner, or making a one-off effort, it makes sense to
enjoy it to the max. Here are 5 tips we think will help you make the most of the 13.1 miles to South Shields.
1. Arrive in good time
Make sure you know your start time. Aim to be there ahead of time, giving yourself sufficient time to find the bag drop,
warm up, find your wave and be ready to cross the start line. There will be 60,000 other runners doing the same,
so it'll pay to give yourself a few extra minutes to do what you need to.
2. Don't run on an empty stomach
Ideally, have a modest breakfast a couple of hours before the race. Toast, ceareal, some fruit, or whatever works for you. Some gels,
or sweets to keep you going in the last few miles will also help.
3. Keep suitably hydrated
It's the tail-end of summer, so it could be a hot day. Be sure to drink at least enough water to avoid dehydration.
At the same time, don't drink too much. Having to pause your race for a pee is annoying. And it'll cost you time.
4. Dress for the weather
Like the rest of the UK, the climate in the North East is unpredictable. Check the forecast on the morning of the race, and equip
yourself accordingly. If it's a bit chilly, many may choose to wear a disposable layer while waiting to start (bin bag, long sleave top, hoodie, etc).
All discarded clothing will be donated to charity.
5. Have fun!
The Great North Run is an occasion to rival any other race event. As well as the camraderie of 60,000 other runners, there will
be entertainment at the start, at the finish and en route. And you'll experience most supportive spectators all along the way.
Whether you're chasing a new PB, raising funds for charity, or just revelling in the enjoyment of the day, make sure you have
a great time on the journey.
